The Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy at the University of Hamburg (IFSH) is an independent research facility ( affiliated institute ) at the University of Hamburg . The institute researches the conditions of peace and security in Germany, Europe and beyond. It examines challenges for the creation and maintenance of peace orders, asks about the causes of crises and escalation dynamics, and analyzes foreign and security policy decision-making processes at national and international level. The IFSH researches independently and independently. Financed by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, it works closely with the University of Hamburg, as well as with institutions in the Hamburg metropolitan region and academic institutions in Germany and abroad.

The IFSH was founded in 1971 as a foundation under civil law at the suggestion of the then Federal President Gustav Heinemann . From 1987 to 2007 it was located in Falkenstein , a wooded area of Hamburg-Blankenese above the Elbe. In 2007 the institute moved to the immediate vicinity of the university campus in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel at Schlump 83 in the former tax office.

The institute's committees include a 10-member board of trustees chaired by the State Councilor for Science, Research and Equality , Eva Gümbel , ( Die Grünen ) and the President of the University of Hamburg, Dieter Lenzen , the institute council led by Ursula Schröder and the scientific advisory board below Anna Geis , university professor for political science at Helmut Schmidt University .

Research areas

The IFSH is concerned with peace and security and how these are influenced by social and technological developments. The influence of climate change on security policy is another research area. The four research areas are:

  • European peace and security orders
  • Social peace and internal security
  • Arms Control and New Technologies
  • Climate research

Publications

While national and international journals and book publications are used to publish current research results, the institute's own format of Policy Briefs offers pointed assessments of current issues in the areas of peace and security. Once a year, the IFSH published together with peace research institutes BICC , HSFK and INEF in Germany, the Peace Report . The institute has published the Democracy, Security and Peace series since the 1970s . Another publication by the House is the OSCE Yearbook . It is the only independent academic book series on the OSCE . In addition, the IFSH has editorial responsibility for the magazine S + F. Security and Peace , one of the leading German journals for peace research and security policy.
