Reinhard Mutz

Reinhard Mutz (born June 3, 1938 ; † December 13, 2017 ) was a German political scientist and peace researcher .

After three years of military service, he studied political science, sociology and modern history at the Free University of Berlin . He received his doctorate in 1978 with a thesis on "Security Policy and the Democratic Public in the Federal Republic of Germany - Problems of Analysis, Criticism and Control of Military Power" and completed his habilitation in 1984 on "Conventional Disarmament in Europe". Between 1966 and 1984 he was tutor, assistant and finally assistant professor at the Institute for International Politics and Regional Studies at the FU Berlin. In 1984 he moved to the Hamburg Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy (IFSH), where he started out as a scientific consultant and was later appointed deputy scientific director.

Between 2003 and 2006 he was acting Scientific Director of the IFSH. From 1992 to 2008 Mutz was co-editor of the annual report of the peace science research institutes in Germany. Since his retirement in 2006 he has been a Senior Research Fellow at the IFSH. Mutz is the author and editor of numerous publications on issues of disarmament, peace research and security policy.

Reinhard Mutz died at the age of 79 on December 13, 2017.
