Giuseppe Caforio

Giuseppe Caforio (born June 21, 1935 in Modena ; † August 2, 2015 ) was a retired Italian Brigadier General . D. of the Italian Armed Forces and military sociologist .

Life

He joined the Italian Armed Forces in 1954 and attended the Accademia Militare di Modena until 1958 . In 1958 he was promoted to lieutenant . From 1960 he trained as a paratrooper . From 1964 to 1968 he was the commander of a paratrooper company. He then studied law at the University of Modena (graduated in 1966) and political science at the University of Pisa (graduated in 1984). From 1975 to 1977 he commanded the 152nd mech. Infantry Regiment "Sassari" (Sassari) (see Brigata meccanizzata "Sassari" ). From 1983 to 1991 he was Commander 2001 of Lucca . After going through several promotions (Hauptmann 1963, Major 1969, Lieutenant Colonel 1973 and Colonel 1983) he retired as Brigadier General in 1992. In 2001 he completed a master's degree in communication science in Pisa . This was followed by a degree in strategy from the University of Turin in 2002 .

In 1985 he became vice-chairman of the Centro Interuniversitario di Studi Storico-Militar (CISRSM). In 1986 he was one of the co-founders of the European Research Group on Military and Society (ERGOMAS). There he was a board member and coordinator of the "Military Profession" working group. In 1988 he became a Fellow of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society (IUS) in Chicago, Illinois. From 1998 to 2002 and again until 2010 he was President of Research Committee 01 (Armed Forces & Conflict Resolution) of the International Sociological Association (ISA), of which he was a member from 1988. After 2010 he was still a member of the board. Caforio was also a member of the Società Italiana di Storia Militare (SISM).

He belonged u. a. on the Editorial Boards of Current Sociology and International Relations and Diplomacy .
