Gerhard Kümmel

Gerhard Kümmel (* 1964 ) is a German political scientist and military sociologist . He is scientific director at the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr and chairman of the working group for the military and social sciences .

Life

From 1985 to 1991 , Kümmel studied political science , sociology and history at the Philipps University of Marburg (MA). A fellow of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation , he was in 1994 when Wilfried von Bredow at the Faculty of Social Science and Philosophy with a thesis on Transnational economic cooperation in a turbulent international to Dr. phil. PhD. In 1992 he was a research fellow at the German Historical Institute (DHI) in Washington, DC, USA. From 1995 to 1997 he was a post-doc fellow of the German Research Foundation (DFG). In 1997 he worked as a lecturer for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) at the University of Victoria in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

From 1997 to 2012 he was a research assistant at the Social Science Institute of the Bundeswehr (SOWI) in Strausberg. In 1998 he became a project manager at SOWI. From 2006 to 2012 he headed the research focus “ Transformation of the Bundeswehr ”. In 2013 he finally became head of the research area “Military Sociology” at the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr in Potsdam. The Scientific Director's current research interests include women in the military , military families and armed forces in post-heroic society. In 1999 he also took on a political science and sociological teaching position at the University of Potsdam , where he has been teaching military sociology in the Military Studies course since 2007 .

Since 2010 Kümmel has been President of the ISA Research Committee “Armed Forces and Conflict Resolution” of the International Sociological Association and since 2000 Chairman of the Working Group on the Military and Social Sciences (AMS), which publishes the military and social sciences series at Nomos Verlag . In addition, he is u. a. Member of the German Society for Sociology and the German Association for Political Science . Kümmel is also associate editor of the journal Armed Forces & Society and a member of the scientific advisory board of the journal for foreign and security policy .
