Armed Forces & Society (AFS) is a social science journal with an international focus. It was founded in 1974 by the founder of military sociology , Morris Janowitz ( University of Chicago ), and acts as the official organ of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society (IUS) at Loyola University Chicago in Chicago , Illinois .

Armed Forces & Society is published by the American science publisher SAGE Publications of Thousand Oaks , California and appears quarterly in English . Prior to being published in print, the peer-reviewed articles are made available electronically on SAGE Journals Online. There are empirical (qualitative and quantitative) and theoretical work, but also research, book reviews received and literature reports in spending.

Patricia Shields from the Department of Political Science at the University Academic Center of Texas State University in San Marcos , Texas has been editor-in-chief since 2001 . She is supported in the Book Review by William Ruger (Texas State University) and Jeremy M. Teigen ( Ramapo College ). The journal takes a historical , comparative and interdisciplinary approach. The editorial board and the authors include scientists from various fields of science such as political science , sociology , history , psychology and economics as well as experts from the military, strategy , arms control and peacekeeping. The articles deal in particular with military organizations , civil-military relations , arms control , peace work and conflict management, as well as ethics , terrorism , security policy , leadership , recruitment , reserves , family , health and military history .

The Editorial Board is made up of international representatives from u. a. France, Singapore and Israel. The German military sociologist Gerhard Kümmel from the Center for Military History and Social Sciences of the Bundeswehr is a member.

AFS is one of the leading magazines in its field. According to the analysis of the Journal Citation Reports from 2013, it has an impact factor of 0.424. It is ranked 106th out of 157 journals among political science journals and 109th among sociological journals out of 138 journals. It ranks 6th among the Military Studies Journals in Google Scholar .
