Bernhard Fleckenstein (sociologist)

Bernhard Fleckenstein (* 1940 in Erfurt ) is a former German ministerial official and military sociologist . He was director and professor of the Social Science Institute of the Bundeswehr .

Life

Fleckenstein did military service in the German armed forces after graduating from high school in 1960 . His last rank was lieutenant colonel of the reserve of the Air Force . From 1962 to 1968 he studied sociology , politics and economics at the University of Frankfurt am Main ( graduate sociologist). In 1977 he earned a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard University .

In 1969 he became a research associate in the office of the Defense Commissioner of the German Bundestag and deputy chief officer . In 1971 he headed the founding conference of the Working Group on the Military and Social Sciences (AMS) in Kiel. From 1972 to 1982 he was a member of the planning staff of the Federal Minister of Defense in Bonn as a senior government councilor or government director . In 1982/83 he worked in staff department I ( internal management , personnel and training) in the command staff of the armed forces (Fü S). From 1984 to 1997 he was director and professor of the Social Science Institute of the Bundeswehr (SOWI) in Munich. During his tenure, the institute moved to Strausberg against great opposition.

He published in the fields of youth sociology , military sociology and security policy (including in magazines such as Aus Politik und Zeitgeschichte , Armed Forces & Society and trade union monthly magazines ).
