The trade union monthly books ( GMH ) were a magazine published by the federal board of the German trade union federation (DGB) , which appeared from 1950 to 2004. The GMH were the theoretical discussion body of the DGB on social, political and scientific topics with a focus on “work”, “society”, “social affairs” and trade union politics .

The magazine

Self-image, orientation and topics

In the course of the establishment of the DGB, the unified trade union formulated the will to advertise its concerns in a journalistic way and on the basis of scientific arguments. The DGB wanted to make its "new and progressive views" understandable to a broad public . In 1950, in a foreword to the first issue, Hans Böckler , the first DGB chairman, gave the motto that determined the function of the magazine: “The 'trade union monthly books' [...] should be a discussion organ in which trade unionists and representatives of science, Representatives of our social partner as well as of public life generally have the opportunity to contribute to the solution of the economic and social problems lying before us in a detailed discussion. "

Important topics, some of which were dealt with in special issues, were the history of the workers' and trade union movements, especially in Germany , considerations on the humanization of work , social and economic challenges of German unity , the crisis in the working society, and considerations on the present and future of the welfare state .

The journal presented a wide range of scientific topics, including history , sociology , legal issues , business and economics issues , political science and social science . In this respect, it acted as a "journalistic hinge" between trade unions and academia.

In addition, the magazine regularly published book reviews of new publications in the range of its topics.

Editors-in-chief and publishers

The editors-in-chief were Walter Pahl (1950–1954), Richard Becker (1954–1957), Walter Fabian (1957–1970), Gerhard Leminsky (1971–1981) and Hans-Otto Hemmer (1981–2004).

The magazine has been published by the Bund-Verlag of the DGB for decades since 1950 . In 1998, the Blick publishing company took over the property. From 1999 to 2003 the union monthly publications belonged to Westdeutscher Verlag , and in 2004 to VS Verlag für Sozialwissenschaften .

Authors

In five and a half decades, several hundred authors - trade unionists, politicians and scientists as well as other public figures - published in the magazine. Most of them belonged to the left-liberal and left-wing political spectrum in the Federal Republic of Germany. Representatives of other political directions also wrote articles for the monthly issue. The spectrum of the GMH ranges from the conservative CDU politician Alfred Dregger to the former president of the BDI Hans-Olaf Henkel to Oskar Lafontaine . Among the scientists there are prominent names such as those of Wolfgang Abendroth , René König and Hans-Ulrich Wehler .

distribution

The magazine was mainly distributed by subscription . Around 1965 the monthly circulation was 8,000 copies.

Predecessor, attitude and successor

The work , the theoretical organ of the General German Trade Union Confederation (ADGB)published monthly from 1924 to 1933, is regarded as the forerunner of the trade union monthly. At the end of 2004, the publisher and publisher justified the discontinuation of the trade union monthly magazines with a "decline in subscriptions that has been ongoing for years". GMH's successor is the online magazine Gegenblende .
