Urs Jaeggi [ ˈjæki ] (born June 23, 1931 in Solothurn ; † February 13, 2021 in Berlin ) was a Swiss sociologist , writer and visual artist .

life and work

Urs Jaeggi - son of a notary - completed an apprenticeship as a banker and worked in this profession for five years. At the same time he made up his school leaving examination on the second educational path and then studied economics and sociology in Geneva, Bern and Berlin. In 1959 he was at the University of Berne Dr. rer. pole. PhD . There he was assistant to the development sociologist Richard Fritz Behrendt . From 1959 to 1961 he was a research assistant at the University of Münster and at the Social Research Center in Dortmund. From 1961 he taught at the Sociological Institute of the University of Bern, where he received his habilitation in 1964 . In 1965 he became Associate Professor of Sociology there. In the 1960s he was married to the psychologist Eva Jaeggi . Their daughter Rahel Jaeggi is professor for practical philosophy at the HU Berlin .

In 1966 he was offered a position at the newly founded Ruhr University Bochum , where he held a chair in sociology. Parts of the student movement related to his work, especially to the analysis of power and rule in the Federal Republic (1969). Unlike Leo Kofler , his successor at the Bochum chair, Jaeggi combined his work in the field of sociological theory with approaches from empirical social research and published at the time, among other things. important work on political sociology . In 1970/71 he taught as a visiting professor at the New School for Social Research in New York. From 1972 to 1992 Jaeggi was a full professor at the Institute for Sociology at the Free University of Berlin .

Urs Jaeggi not only emerged as the author of numerous sociological works, but also as the author of fictional works. His archive is located in the Swiss Literature Archive in Bern. From 1985 Jaeggi also worked as a painter, sculptor and in the field of action art .

Urs Jaeggi lived in Berlin and Mexico City . He died in Berlin in February 2021 at the age of 89.
