Bernd Faulenbach (born November 3, 1943 in Pyritz , Pomerania ) is a German historian and honorary professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum . From 1982 to 2007 he was deputy director of the Research Institute for Workers' Education and Research Institute for Work, Education, Participation (FIAB) in Recklinghausen .

academic career

After studying the science of history , German studies , political science , philosophy and pedagogy Faulenbach put first a state examination for secondary education from. In 1977 he was at the University of Bochum with a dissertation on German history in historiography between Empire and Nazi doctorate . First he taught at the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund , then he worked as a research assistant at the Ruhr University.

From 1981 he was a research assistant (with responsibility for history and theory) at the Research Institute for Workers' Education in Recklinghausen and from 1982 until the institute was closed in 2007 as its deputy director. In 1993 he was appointed honorary professor by the University of Bochum .

Research priorities

At the Recklinghausen Institute, Faulenbach carried out projects on social and contemporary history as well as didactics . a. on the history of co-determination and political culture , on company history and employee experience , rationalization , oral history , adult education , historical awareness , structural change and the educational system , as well as on the didactics of history in adult education , in museums and in memorials.

Faulenbach intervened in the history debates of the 1980s and 1990s, such as the historians ' dispute, the discussion about historical awareness after the fall of the Wall in the GDR and the disputes about historical memorials such as the Holocaust memorial .

He coined the term “Ideology of the German Way” ( Sonderweg ), which goes back to his 1980 monograph of the same name. Faulenbach was a member of various inquiry commissions of the Bundestag and other commissions of the federal and state governments as well as of foundations , museums and memorials. From 1989 until its dissolution in 2018 he was chairman of the historical commission of the SPD party executive . In 1992 he became chairman of the expert commission of the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation . From 1998 to the beginning of 2016 he was deputy chairman of the Federal Foundation for Coming to terms with the SED dictatorship . He also works as a liaison professor for the Friedrich Ebert Foundation .

Faulenbach is chairman of the Association Against Forgetting - For Democracy .

Faulenbach was chairman of the Bochum SPD from 2001 to April 2009, and has been its honorary chairman ever since.

Awards

In 1998 Bernd Faulenbach received the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class. In 2016 he received the Great Federal Cross of Merit .
