The Brandenburg Ministry of Culture is responsible for the legal supervision of the foundation . In order to fulfill its tasks, the foundation receives an annual grant, which is provided in equal parts by the state of Brandenburg and the Federal Republic of Germany .

The foundation is based in Oranienburg in the so-called T-building , which housed the inspection of the concentration camps from 1938 to 1945 .

Board of the Foundation is the head of the Sachsenhausen Memorial virtue of his office. He bears the title of Foundation Director and manages the day-to-day business of the Foundation. The Deputy Director of the Foundation is the director of the Ravensbrück Memorial. An administrative director runs the foundation's office.

A foundation council with seven members, chaired by the Minister of Culture of the State of Brandenburg, decides on the fundamental matters of the foundation including the hiring of senior employees. In addition, there is an advisory board with up to 20 members who represent groups and associations affected by the purpose of the foundation, and an expert commission of seven experts .

history

The establishment of the foundation was based on suggestions from a commission of experts that had submitted recommendations to the state of Brandenburg for a new conception of memorial work in 1992. The chairman of this commission was Bernd Faulenbach , who became the first chairman of its expert commission after the foundation was established in 1993. Jürgen Dittberner was the first foundation director until 1997 . Axel Drecoll has headed the foundation since 2018. Pierre Gouffault , Thomas Lutz , Joachim Müller and Eberhard Zastrau have been appointed to the Foundation's Advisory Board .

The foundation maintains and maintains the memorials and museums in the former Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück concentration camps , plans and designs exhibitions and events, conducts scientific research and museum educational work, and creates publications on these former camps and the results of its own work. The foundation also deals with the history of the Soviet special camp Sachsenhausen and its consideration in a revised memorial and modern contemporary history museum. This redesign process in Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück is still ongoing. Permanent and changing exhibitions provide information about the history of the camps and detention centers at the authentic location.

The foundation's business plan estimated expenditure of € 6,443,900 and income of € 280,300 for 2015. The difference of € 6,163,600 is to be covered by grants from the State of Brandenburg and the Federal Republic of Germany. The number of employees of the foundation was estimated at 57.5 debit positions for 2015.
