Joachim Müller (historian)

Hans-Joachim Müller (born March 11, 1938 in Bitterfeld ) is a German historian who focuses on the academic analysis of the persecution of homosexual men during the Nazi era .

Life

Little is known about Müller's career. In 1959 he moved to West Berlin , studied in the Federal Republic and returned to West Berlin with the "teaching qualification for the intermediate level". Later he belonged to the "Homosexuality Discussion Group" of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg , in which persecution under National Socialism, not only of homosexuals, was an important topic. Since 1984 he has been committed to the recognition of homosexual men as victims of National Socialism. During this time he began researching the history of homosexual men in the Klinkerwerk subcamp . His long-term research on the history of the previously taboo group of victims of homosexual men in Sachsenhausen concentration camp was made public for the first time in 1992. He was one of the initiators of the first memorial event for homosexual prisoners at the Sachsenhausen Memorial . Joachim Müller worked at the Schwules Museum in Berlin and was a member of the international advisory board of the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation from 1993 to 2001 . At the suggestion of the Foundation, he was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany for his services on April 5, 2013.

  • Homosexual men in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp , with Andreas Sternweiler , published by the Schwules Museum , Verlag Rosa Winkel, Berlin 2000, ISBN 3-86149-097-8 . The book was published for the exhibition "Persecution of Homosexual Men in Berlin 1933-45" at the Schwules Museum in cooperation with the Sachsenhausen Memorial. Second edition 2015.
