Magnus Hirschfeld Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Magnus Hirschfeld Prize , also known as the Magnus Hirschfeld Emancipation Prize , has been awarded since 1997 by the SPD Berlin and the Schwusos (today: SPDqueer, Germany's oldest LGBT group).

The prize, endowed with 500 euros, was donated by the SPD at the suggestion of the state working group for gay social democrats and was awarded for the first time on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the scientific-humanitarian committee on May 15, 1897 by the doctor and sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld . Since then it has been awarded at irregular intervals for special services to the political equality of lesbians and gays . The award takes place by handing over a plaque with the portrait of Magnus Hirschfeld.

Originally an award was planned in the three categories “woman”, “man” and “group”. In 1997, at the suggestion of the “ Homosexuals and Church ” group, Helmut Kentler was given an award in the “Man” category for the dismantling of prejudices against homosexuals within the churches. Due to an article by Ursula Enders about the controversial positions of Helmut Kentler, Rüdiger Lautmann and Reinhart Wolff on pedophilia and pederasty , the awarding of the award to Kentler was initially "suspended" until a careful examination and withdrawn completely at the end of June 1997.

Since then, the prize has been awarded twice: on the one hand, one person is honored for their life's work or an individual achievement, on the other hand, an institution or a project, whereby the main criterion is an outstanding achievement in the emancipation of lesbians, gays and transgender people .
