Klaus Schönhoven

Klaus Schönhoven (born July 19, 1942 in Würzburg ) is a German historian . From 1984 to 2007 he was Professor of Political Science and Contemporary History at the University of Mannheim .

Life

Schönhoven graduated from high school in Würzburg in 1963 and then studied history, political science and German at the universities of Würzburg and Munich. In 1971 he received his doctorate in Würzburg with a thesis on The Bavarian People's Party from 1924 to 1932 . From 1971 to 1979 he was a research assistant at the Institute for History at the University of Würzburg . After completing his habilitation, he studied expansion and concentration. Studies on the development of the free trade unions in Wilhelminian Germany 1890-1914 and the appointment as a private lecturer, he represented chairs for modern and contemporary history at the universities of Trier and Göttingen between 1979 and 1984. At the same time he was a fellow of the German Research Foundation in the Heisenberg program from 1980 to 1984 . In autumn 1984 he was appointed professor for political science and contemporary history at the University of Mannheim.

Schönhoven has made a name for himself as a social historian and historian of the German labor movement, whose research in the 19th and 20th centuries is the focus of his research. In addition to studies on the history of the trade unions and social democracy, he has written a number of contemporary historical works that illuminate the topics of German history in the 20th century (Weimar Republic, National Socialism, Federal Republic) in detail.
