Günter Brakelmann
Günter Brakelmann (born September 3, 1931 in Bochum ) is a German Protestant theologian and sociologist. From 1972 to 1996 he was Professor of Christian Social Studies at the Faculty of Protestant Theology at the Ruhr University in Bochum .
Life
Brakelmann studied Protestant theology, social sciences and history at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen and the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster . After receiving his doctorate in 1959, Brakelmann first became a vocational school and student pastor in Siegen . From 1962 to 1968 he was a lecturer at the Evangelical Social Academy in Friedewald . In 1967 he became a research associate at the Institute for Christian Social Studies at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster, before he was appointed director of the Evangelical Academy in Berlin in 1970 . In 1972 he accepted a professorship for Christian Social Studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum. In 1985 he was instrumental in founding the Association for Research into Church and Religious History in the Ruhr Area .
Brakelmann, who was active in various committees of the Westphalian regional church , the Evangelical Church in Germany and the SPD , was also a member of various committees of West German Broadcasting and the Advisory Board for the First German Television .
His main research interests are the relationship between the church and social issues since the beginning of the 19th century, the history of anti-Semitism and the history of the resistance against National Socialism .

Günter Brakelmann has been married to the teacher Ingrid Brust since 1958. The marriage produced three daughters.
Awards
- 1986: Federal Cross of Merit 1st class by the Minister of Education, Hans Schwier .
- 2000: Hans Ehrenberg Prize from the society of the same name and the Evangelical Church District Bochum.
- 2003: Grand Federal Cross of Merit by Prime Minister Peer Steinbrück .
- 2010: Heinrich Brauns Prize of the Diocese of Essen for services to Catholic social teaching and the Christian social movement.
