Hans-Joachim Maaz (born February 17, 1943 in Niedereinsiedel , Bohemia ) is a German psychiatrist , psychoanalyst and author .

Life

Hans-Joachim Maaz grew up in Sebnitz in Saxony. From 1962 to 1968 he studied medicine at the University of Halle and in 1974 became a specialist in neurology and psychiatry. He then headed a neurological-psychiatric department in Beeskow , where he obtained the specialist title for psychotherapy in 1980.

From 1980 until his retirement in 2008 he was chief physician of the psychotherapeutic and psychosomatic clinic in the Evangelical Diakoniewerk Halle . There he developed psychoanalytic , depth psychological and body psychotherapeutic forms of therapy, especially in the field of inpatient group psychoanalysis . Under the roof of the church he was able to work relatively independently of the GDR regime. In 1988 he organized a further training course on Intended Dynamic Group Therapy with Heinz Benkenstein as a supervisor.

Maaz became known through his work as an author. From 1989 to 1991 he had a regular column on the youth radio DT64 . In 1990 he published his much-noticed book The Emotional Jam , in which he examined the interactions between state repression in the GDR system and the psychological sensitivities of the population. He published here for the first time his view of the society of the GDR as a psychotherapist and looked back: "The experience that every person I have met is brimming with emotional misery [...] has decisively influenced my life." In his follow-up works continued he also took a critical look at the situation in reunified Germany and looked in particular at the psychological background and consequences of the failure of the GDR.

The focus of his later popular books such as Die Liebesfalle are relationships and the influence of formative experiences in the family. He also worked as an author and editor of specialist publications. He also comments on current issues. Against the background of his experience with the psychological effects of early day nursery care in the GDR, he supports the family-political Christian-conservative interest group Familiennetzwerk , which rejects early external care for infants and toddlers and advocates attachment-centered early education in a family setting.

After his retirement in 2008, Maaz continued to work as a writer and to appear in the media. So he was z. B. until the beginning of 2013 monthly guest at Alles Psycho? in MDR Figaro . In 2012 he presented his book The Narcissistic Society on Swiss radio DRS 2 ; In 2015 he was present in the table talk and in 2016 in the daily talk of the West German radio station WDR 5 . He presented his book, published in 2017, in a lecture at the University of Leipzig , which summarizes his life's work, and also gave an interview to the television station RT-TV . In an interview with the DNN in October 2017, he analyzed East German voting behavior.

In 2017 Maaz was a signatory to the signature collection Charter 2017 initiated by the Dresden bookseller and Pegida sympathizer Susanne Dagen , which criticized the behavior of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels with regard to the protests against the presence of publishers classified as right-wing at the Frankfurt Book Fair . After the riots in Chemnitz in 2018, he campaigned for understanding for the demonstrators, resisted their general classification as right-wing extremists and criticized the generalized reactions of Chemnitz Mayor Barbara Ludwig ( SPD ) and the federal government in this context .
