Michael Geyer (medical doctor)

Michael Florian Geyer (born April 2, 1943 in Erfurt ) is a German psychiatrist , psychosomatic specialist and psychotherapist , retired university professor and author . Until his retirement he was director of the clinic and polyclinic for psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine at the University of Leipzig . Geyer has authored more than 270 scientific publications, including several monographs .

Life

Michael Geyer was born as the first child of a medium-sized business family in Erfurt, Thuringia, where he also went to school and passed his Abitur. From 1961 to 1966 he studied medicine at the Universities of Sofia , Leipzig and Erfurt . In 1966 he received his doctorate A for Dr. med. in psychiatry at the Medical Academy Erfurt with his dissertation on insulin shock therapy under ganglion blockade. In 1978 there followed the doctorate B (corresponds to the habilitation ) for neurology and psychiatry with his work Psychosocial Characteristics in Heart Attack Risk .

From 1983 to 1992 Geyer was full professor for neurology and psychiatry in the medicine department of the Karl Marx University Leipzig, from 1992 professor ( C 4 ) for psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy at the medical faculty of the University of Leipzig until his retirement in 2008. 1990 he was appointed director for psychotherapy and psychosomatic medicine at the Leipzig University Hospital and remained so until 2008. From 1992 to 1999 he was a member of the Faculty Council of the Medical Faculty, from 1995 to 1998 Vice-Rector for University Development at the University of Leipzig. As of 2016 he is Scientific Director of the Academy for Psychotherapy GmbH Erfurt and Director of the Erfurt Psychotherapy Week.

Geyer is a specialist in psychiatry and neurology (1971) and psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy (1992) as well as a psychoanalyst , and since 2003 a recognized teaching and control analyst of the DGPT . He conducts research in the fields of psychosomatic medicine, psychotherapy, psychiatry and psychiatric epidemiology.

Geyer was u. a. from 1968 to 1991 full member of the Society for Psychiatry and Neurology of the GDR, from 1982 to 2003 chairman of the Society for Psychotherapy, Psychosomatics and Medical Psychology e. V. (Society for Medical Psychotherapy of the GDR until 1989), from 1990 to 2008 chairman of the examination committees for psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and psychotherapeutic medicine of the Saxon State Medical Association and has been honorary chairman of the Saxon advanced training group for psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and psychosomatic medicine since 2007. V., since 2008 honorary member of the Saxon Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy e. V. and the Institute for Psychological Psychotherapy Leipzig e. V.

Geyer is married and has three grown children.

  • 1982: Oskar Vogt Prize of the Society for Medical Psychotherapy of the GDR - for special scientific achievements in the field of psychotherapy
  • 2003: John Rittmeister Medal of the Society for Psychotherapy, Psychosomatics and Medical Psychology e. V. - for special services in the field of psychotherapy
  • 2012: Heigl Prize of the German Society for Psychosomatic Medicine and Medical Psychotherapy (DGPM) e. V. - as a member of the working group Cornelia Albani, Gerd Blaser, Michael Geyer, Gabriele Schmutzer & Elmar Brähler for the research work on outpatient psychotherapy in Germany from the patient's point of view - parts 1 and 2 .
