Carl-Christoph Schweitzer (born October 3, 1924 in Potsdam ; † July 4, 2017 in Bonn ) was a German political scientist and politician. He was a member of the Bundestag for the SPD .

Life

Schweitzer attended the Kant high school in Berlin-Spandau and the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich . His father was the Protestant theologian and fellow campaigner of the Confessing Church Carl Gunther Schweitzer , who came from a Jewish family, his mother Paula was a pastor's daughter. In May 1939 the Schweitzer family had to flee Germany because of their persecution as Jews . Carl-Christoph Schweitzer's family received one of the few invitations that came from England. Her savior was the Bishop of Chichester George Bell . Schweitzer was allowed to study in England. He chose history and philosophy at Oxford University , from which he graduated in 1946 with a bachelor's degree. Schweitzer then moved back to Germany with his family and began studying history. In 1949 he received his doctorate in history at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau on the subject of Left Liberals' criticism of Bismarck's foreign policy .

Schweitzer's professional career began in 1951/1952, becoming one of the first speakers at the newly founded Federal Agency for Civic Education . Between 1961 and 1963 he worked on the personal staff of the then Federal President Lübke. At the same time he had a teaching position at the University of Frankfurt, where he also received his habilitation . From 1963 he was appointed professor of political science (international politics, especially foreign policy in the USA), first at the PH Berlin, then also at the FU Berlin. In 1969 he went to Bonn University as a professor.

Der Spiegel reported in February 1969 about the then 44-year-old. The latter was accused of having indirectly benefited politically from the work of his students. In the edition of March 10, 1969, Der Spiegel published a letter to the editor from Carl-Christoph Schweitzer, who pointed out that the candidacy in the constituency in question had not yet been determined at the time of the survey. Letters to the editor from two students who defended Carl-Christoph Schweitzer against the allegations were also published in the print edition of Der Spiegel magazine.

Schweitzer stood in 1972 for the constituency 149 / Ahrweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate near Bonn for the SPD and became a member of the German Bundestag in the 7th electoral term of the German Bundestag (1972-1976) . In the 8th electoral term (1976-1980) he moved up on March 11, 1980 for the resigned SPD member Conrad Ahlers on the party list. Schweitzer was no longer represented in the Bundestag during the 9th electoral term. Schweitzer was a member of the committees for foreign policy and defense as well as the parliamentary inquiry commission for “constitutional reform”. In 1979 he wrote the book The Deputy in the Parliamentary System of Government of the Federal Republic, which became compulsory reading for his students.

Schweitzer was the initiator and, for a long time, chairman of the non-profit Action Community Spirit. V., which was founded in 1957. Most recently he was honorary chairman. He was also a member of the founding committee of the German-Japanese Society for Integrative Science .
