Hans-Peter Dürr (2007)

Hans-Peter Emil Dürr (born October 7, 1929 in Stuttgart ; † May 18, 2014 in Munich ) was a German physicist and essayist . He was on the board of directors of the Max Planck Institute for Physics three times , namely 1970–1971, 1977–1980 and most recently again 1987–1992.

Life

Dürr studied physics at the University of Stuttgart (diploma 1953). He then went to the University of California, Berkeley , where he received his doctorate in 1956 under Edward Teller . Dürr lived in the International House .

From 1958 to 1976 Dürr was an employee of Werner Heisenberg , who had a great influence on him. He was his closest collaborator in Heisenberg's project to attempt to establish a unified field theory of elementary particles. In 1962 he taught as a visiting professor in Berkeley and Madras . In the same year he completed his habilitation at the University of Munich in nuclear physics , elementary particle physics and gravity . He then became an adjunct professor at the University of Munich, and in 1978 he succeeded Werner Heisenberg as managing director of the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics at the same location. He held this position until 1980 and again from 1987 to 1992. Later he increasingly turned away from theoretical physics and dealt with epistemological and socio-political issues.

Dürr founded in January 27, 1987 Starnberg the registered association Global Challenges Network e. V. ('GCN e.V.' for short, English freely translated for "Network for global challenges"). The aim of the association is to create a network of companies and groups that work constructively and collectively “to overcome the problems that threaten us and thus our natural environment”. In the same year he was awarded the Right Livelihood Award (“Alternative Nobel Prize”) “in recognition of his well-founded criticism of the Strategic Defense Initiative and his work in harnessing advanced technologies for peaceful purposes ”. In addition, the science and research critical international group Pugwash , of which he was a member, received the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize in 1987 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995 . In 1992, a joint lecture with Christiane Busch-Lüty at the Verein für Socialpolitik initiated the foundation of the Vereinigung für Ökologische Ökonomie in 1996, of which he was a founding member. He was a member of the Club of Rome and a member of the honorary board of trustees of the International Munich Peace Conference , as well as a speaker on Pastor Jürgen Flieges third “Wörishofener Herbst” in 2011 .

In 1975 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina , in 2002 he was made an honorary doctorate from the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg , and in 2004 he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit.

In 2005 Dürr wrote the Potsdam Memorandum and the Potsdam Manifesto together with Daniel Dahm and Rudolf zur Lippe , which were signed by many scientists from all over the world, including a. from over 20 Right Livelihood Award winners .

In 2007 the Munich city council decided to grant Hans-Peter Dürr honorary citizenship in recognition of his great services to the city of Munich . In spring 2007, at the request of Jakob von Uexküll , Dürr joined the World Future Council as a council member.

Dürr was married to the American Carol Sue Durham. The marriage had four children.
