Life
Uexküll, nephew of Thure von Uexküll and grandson of the German Baltic biologist Jakob Johann von Uexküll , is the son of the journalist Gösta von Uexküll and grew up in Hamburg . He has Swedish and German citizenship. Uexküll studied philosophy , politics and economics at Oxford , where he obtained a Master of Arts degree in 1966 .
Due to the increasing urgency of the ecological problems, he suggested that the Nobel Foundation introduce one or two new prizes for this area. After his proposal was rejected by the foundation, he selected two award winners in the proposed area and, in 1980, carried out a corresponding award ceremony himself in a rented restaurant. After inheriting an important stamp collection and trading it professionally, he founded the Right Livelihood Award Foundation in 1980 with the proceeds of the stamp trade and donated the Right Livelihood Award known as the "Alternative Nobel Prize". The prize is awarded annually to initiators who are active in alternative activities and honors humanitarian, social and ecological projects on the way to a better world. The award ceremony has been held in the Swedish Parliament since 1985. Today the foundation is headed by his nephew Ole von Uexküll .
From 1987 to 1989 Uexküll was for the Greens in the European Parliament , but left voluntarily after a legislative period . From 1989 to 1990 he was on the board of Greenpeace Germany. In 1999 he was awarded the Salzburg State Prize for Future Research. In 2007 he founded the World Future Council together with Herbert Girardet . This advocates responsible, sustainable thinking and acting in the interests of future generations. Its 50 members come from politics, business, science and culture - and from all five continents. With the help of its network of scientists, parliamentarians and environmental organizations, the Council identifies future-oriented policy approaches worldwide and promotes their implementation at international, national and regional level. In January 2019, he resigned as chairman of the foundation's board.
Jakob von Uexküll is co-founder and patron of other organizations as well as a frequent speaker and organizer. On November 10, 2006, he was awarded the great Binding Prize for nature and environmental protection in Vaduz (Liechtenstein) . On March 13, 2008, he received the Erich Fromm Prize 2008 in the “White Hall” of the New Palace in Stuttgart . In 2009, he was honored with the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
