Herbert Girardet

Herbert Girardet (* 1943 in Essen ) is a German publicist and environmental activist based in Wales . The focus of his work is particularly the sustainable development of urban areas .

Life

After finishing school at Birklehof boarding school , Girardet went to study in Tübingen and Berlin and finally in 1964 to London. This was followed by a degree in anthropology from the London School of Economics . As a result, Girardet made documentaries on environmental issues for television and began writing books. One of his most important works is the book Fern von Garten Eden , which was written in collaboration with environmental activist John Seymour and published in 1986.

In 2005 Girardet began in London, together with the founder of the Right Livelihood Award Jakob von Uexküll, the preparations for the World Future Council (WFC), a non-profit foundation. The purpose of the WFC is to network the work of parliamentarians, scientists and non-governmental organizations and to develop solutions for a more sustainable world. Girardet has been program director there since it was officially founded in Hamburg in May 2007.

Herbert Girardet is also chairman of the EF Schumacher Society , honorary member of the Royal Institute of British Architects , visiting professor at the Universities of Northumbria and West of England , member of the board of the Leopold Kohr Academy and patron of the Soil Association .

He is married and has two sons. His father was the publisher Herbert Girardet .
