Herbert Girardet (born July 12, 1910 in Essen , † October 6, 1972 in Unterjoch ) was a German publisher .

Herbert Girardet was a son of Wilhelm (II.) Girardet , the eldest son of the company's founder and councilor Wilhelm Girardet . Herbert's brother was the print shop owner and publisher Wilhelm (III.) Girardet (1902–1996), who continued the W. Girardet company in Essen in the third generation.

After attending school, Herbert Girardet studied economics and newspaper science, philosophy and art history in Berlin , Tübingen and Leipzig from 1930 to 1936 . In 1930 he became a member of the Corps Suevia Tübingen . With the writing The economic structure of the communist daily press in Germany from 1918 to 1933 he received his doctorate in 1938 at the University of Leipzig to the doctor of philosophy .

Girardet was initially a volunteer at newspaper publishers in Düsseldorf and Chemnitz . This was followed by World War II when he was a soldier.

In 1945 Girardet joined the family company W. Girardet in Essen and became a personally liable partner. After his brother Wilhelm (III :) returned from captivity, he took over the management of the specialist magazine and specialist book publisher. With new editions of magazines and specialist books, he expanded the publishing house to such an extent that in 1972 there were more than 500 titles from business and technology.

His offices included the vice-presidency of the Association of German Magazine Publishers and the deputy chairmanship of the specialist group for specialist journals in this association.

Girardet was an important art collector and active sponsor of the Folkwang School and the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra .

Honors

Herbert Girardet was a holder of the Great Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 1953 became an honorary citizen of the Technical University of Aachen .
