Hans Peter Duerr

Hans Peter Duerr (born June 6, 1943 in Mannheim ) is a German ethnologist and cultural historian . He lives in Mannheim.

Career

Duerr studied ethnology at the universities in Vienna and Heidelberg . He received his doctorate in philosophy in 1971 from the University of Heidelberg on the theory of consciousness . From 1975 to 1980 he was a lecturer and visiting professor for ethnology and cultural history in Zurich , Kassel and Bern . In 1981 he completed his habilitation at the comprehensive university in Kassel . From 1992 to 1999 he taught as a professor for ethnology and cultural history at the University of Bremen . In 1989/1990 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and in 1995/1996 at the European University of Florence .

Scientific work

Regional focuses in Duerr's work are indigenous North America , East Indonesia and North Frisia .

The band Traumzeit. On the Frontiers between Wilderness and Civilization was published in 1978 and has become a widely read book at German universities. In it, Duerr describes natural religious traditions . His subjects are shamans , witches , astrologers . He is concerned with the question of what a person of western civilization can learn from ancient traditions. In particular, he processes experiences that he was able to gain from dealing with foreign cultures.

In his five-volume main work The Myth of the Civilization Process, Duerr is about a refutation of the civilization theory of Norbert Elias , which he put forward in 1939 in his main work on the process of civilization .
