Horst Kern (social scientist)

Horst Kern (born September 29, 1940 in Vienna ) is a German social scientist.

After graduating from Hohenstaufen-Gymnasium in Göppingen, he studied social sciences from 1959 to 1964, in particular sociology and economics in Wilhelmshaven, Berlin and Göttingen with a degree in social economics. In 1970 he received his doctorate. disc. pole. at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Göttingen. In 1971 he became a scientific councilor and professor, and in 1973 he became a full professor at the Technical University of Hanover . In 1977, Kern accepted a position at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . From 1998 to 2004 he was president of this university. He is a full member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciencesand was President of the Sociological Research Institute at the University of Göttingen. In October 2008 he retired.

He is married to the sociologist Ilona Ostner .
