Konrad Jarausch

Konrad Hugo Jarausch (born August 14, 1941 in Magdeburg ) is a German-American historian and former director of the Center for Contemporary History Research (ZZF) in Potsdam .

Live and act

Jarausch, who grew up in Bavaria and the Rhineland, moved to the USA in 1959 and studied at the University of Wisconsin and Princeton . He then taught at the University of Missouri , Columbia, and has been Lurcy Professor for European Civilization at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1983 . Visiting professorships and research stays have repeatedly taken him to Germany (Saarbrücken, Göttingen, Bielefeld, Leipzig and Potsdam). From 1998 to 2006, together with Christoph Kleßmann and Martin Sabrow, he headed the Center for Contemporary History Research (ZZF) in Potsdam, which was newly founded after reunification.

Jarausch was or is the chairman of several professional societies (German Studies Association, Conference Group for Central European History) as well as editor or member of the editorial board of specialist journals ( contemporary historical research , yearbook for university history , historical and social science research, History of Higher Education Annual, Central European History, German Studies Review, History of Education Quarterly). He is also senior editor of the online historians network H-Soz-Kult . He coined the term “ welfare dictatorship ”.

Jarausch is married and has two sons.
