David R. Segal (2008)

David R. Segal (* 1941 ) is an American military sociologist . He is Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park .

Life

Segal studied sociology at Binghamton University (BA 1962) in New York and the University of Chicago (MA 1963, Ph.D. 1967) in Illinois.

From 1966 to 1975 he was an assistant or associate professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. In 1972/73 he headed the Center for Research on Social Organization there . From 1973 to 1975 he was head of the Social Processes Technical Area at the US Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences . Since 1976 he has been Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland.

In 1976 he was Chairman of the Working Group on Human Resource Management of the Military Operations Research Society . Since 1986 he has served on the Board of Directors of the Israeli Institute for Military Studies . In 1991/92 he was Chair of the Section on Peace and War of the American Sociological Association and in 1994/95 President of the District of Columbia Sociological Society. From 1994 to 1998 he was President of the Research Committee on Armed Forces and Conflict Resolution of the International Sociological Association and from 1995 to 2003 of the Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society in Chicago.
