The 1996 Embassy Snooker World Championship was the 59th edition of the World Snooker Championship . It took place from April 20 to May 6, 1996 at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield and formed the conclusion of the 1995/96 snooker season .

The Scottish Stephen Hendry became world champion for the fifth time in a row , winning his sixth world title. In the final he defeated the Englishman Peter Ebdon 18:12. Last year's finalist Nigel Bond was eliminated in the semi-finals against Hendry. Ebdon had defeated, among others, the world number two Steve Davis and Ronnie O'Sullivan .
