The World Snooker Championship 1972 (also 1972 Park Drive World Snooker Championship ) was a professional snooker tournament which 1971 and 26 February 1972 was played from March. In the qualification, in which eight players took part, two players could qualify for the finals. Eight players and the two qualifiers were admitted to the main round. The qualifiers also included the future world champion Alex Higgins , who became the first snooker world champion to play qualifying games. The defending champion John Spencer lost in the final with 32:37. The highest break of the tournament was also played by Higgins. Higgins received a bonus of ₤ 400 for his world title.
For the first time, a World Championship was sponsored by Park Drive .

The final was held at Selly Park British Legion from February 21-26 . Higgins was in the lead early on, so Spencer was continually lagging behind that he couldn't catch up. At 22 years and 345 days, Higgins was the youngest world champion ahead of Stephen Hendry .
