Tournament course

First round

At 17, Judd Trump was the youngest participant in the finals. The oldest player was the six-time world champion Steve Davis at the age of 49.

Some of the favorites were eliminated in the first round. The defending champion and first in the provisional world rankings, Graeme Dott , failed due to Ian McCulloch . World number two, Ken Doherty , also lost his opening game despite the highest break in the first round with 135 points. Former world champion Mark J. Williams also failed in the first round. In the duel between the two "old masters" Steve Davis against John Parrott , who had already contested the final of the 1989 World Cup, Parrott won just 10: 9. The match between Ronnie O'Sullivan and Ding Junhui was eagerly awaited . The two players had already faced each other twice in the season in the final of a tournament, with each player winning once. In the run-up, O'Sullivan had expressed suspicion of manipulation because of the draw, especially since a very strong opponent was drawn in the second round, the two-time tournament winner of the current season, Neil Robertson . However, "The Rocket" won his first round game easily with 10: 2.

Round of 16

The last sixteen was the final destination for some other favorites. Last year's finalist Peter Ebdon lost to the strong playing Mark Selby , while the seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry was eliminated after an overall poor tournament performance against Allister Carter . As strong as in the first round, John Higgins played , who easily won against Fergal O'Brien 13: 4. Probably the best game of the tournament up to that point was played by Ronnie O'Sullivan and Neil Robertson. After O'Sullivan first took an 8: 3 lead, Robertson won six frames in a row (with 140 points he achieved the highest break in the World Cup to date) and took a 8: 9 lead. In the end, however, O'Sullivan still managed to win the game with 13:10.

Quarter finals

In the quarterfinals, O'Sullivan played again against one of the title favorites, this time against John Higgins. O'Sullivan lost 9:13 against Higgins, who had already played outstandingly in the previous rounds and took the lead in the provisional ranking when he made it to the semi-finals. There he met Stephen Maguire in a purely Scottish duel , who had clearly defeated Anthony Hamilton 13: 7. In the lower half of the tournament tree, both semi-finalists had to walk the full distance of 25 frames in the quarter-finals. Ali Carter had to admit defeat to Mark Selby at 12:13, as was Matthew Stevens in the last frame against Shaun Murphy. Stevens was already in the lead with 11: 5 and then with 12: 7 and only needed one frame to win. Murphy started a dramatic race to catch up, however, winning six frames in a row and making it to the semifinals. This defeat was doubly bitter for Stevens, as it meant that he was no longer among the top 16 players in the updated snooker world rankings.

Semifinals

Up to the quarter-finals, the games in the Crucible take place in parallel on two snooker tables next to each other, from the semi-finals onwards traditionally only one table is played.

In the first semi-final between John Higgins and Stephen Maguire, Higgins was able to prevail with 17:15. Maguire was in the lead by frames for most of the game and went into the last session four frames ahead, but there Higgins turned the game around. The decisive 32nd frame was marked by great nervousness on the part of both players as well as numerous relatively gross mistakes that made a high break impossible. The decision came after a long safety duel when Higgins punched the last red and then Maguire failed with a snooker.

final

After John Higgins had taken the lead 12: 4 frames at the end of the first day and clearly dominated the second session with 7: 1, Mark Selby managed to win six frames in a row in the afternoon session of the second game day thus shortening his deficit to 12:10. In the crucial evening session, at 14:13, he was even able to come within a frame. The frames up to then had been long and hard-fought. In this last hour Selby showed some breathtaking pots across the table, for example as a steep kick or as a multiple combination, but was never able to continue the break due to position problems or minor mistakes. Meanwhile, Higgins found his way back into the game, fought his way through the next two frames, and won the next with a century break. Standing one frame before the win, he then took the first opportunity to make a decisive break and finally won 18:13. The match ended at 0:55 a.m. GMT , increasing the previous year's record by another two minutes. The final judge was Eirian Williams .
