Dermot McGlinchey (born May 9, 1973 ) is a Northern Irish snooker player from Castlederg ( County Tyrone ). Between 1991 and 2011 he was active as a professional on the Snooker Main Tour for 9 seasons .

Career

Even in his youth, Dermot McGlinchey was one of the best players in Northern Ireland. In 1989 he was Northern Irish U-16 champion. At the age of 18 he first took part in the then open professional tour and qualified for the last 128 in two tournaments. At the Northern Irish professional championship, he was in the round of 16.

In the 1992/93 season he defeated Franky Chan at the Grand Prix, among others, and came under the last 64. In addition, this and the next season, at the latest, the round of the last 128 was the final destination in the professional tournaments. He did not get beyond position 168 in the ranking list in the 1994/95 season. In the next three years there were no better results and when the professional field was limited for the 1997/98 season, he could not qualify through the WPBSA Qualifying School. Therefore, he only played the four tournaments of the subordinate UK Tour this season . Although he did not achieve any top placements there, his performance was sufficient for another professional year in the 1998/99 season. However, there were almost only defeats at the beginning. Only in the Benson & Hedges Championship , an open tournament with no world ranking points, did he reach round 3.

This ended his professional time for the time being. In the following years he continued to take part in tournaments open to amateurs as well as in the UK and Challenge Tour, but with little success. Only with two round of 16 at the Challenge Tour tournaments in the 2003/04 season did an upward trend emerge. It was also his most successful season as an amateur. At the 2003 IBSF World Championships he reached the quarter-finals and at the 2004 European Championships he made it to the semi-finals, where he lost 4-6 to Alex Borg .

Above all, McGlinchey remained one of the best amateurs in Northern Ireland and in 2006 qualified as national champion for the free Main Tour course, for which the Northern Irish Snooker Association was allowed to nominate a player. In his first professional tournament in the 2006/07 season , the Northern Ireland Trophy , he defeated Paul Davison and Shokat Ali and finished in the bottom 64 at his home tournament. At the Grand Prix , however, he did not survive the group stage with three wins and than after only one more opening win followed, he retired from the Main Tour as 87th out of 96 players in the world rankings . After that he managed to get the Northern Irish nomination for the professional tour again in 2010. But in the 2010/11 season he was almost exclusively successful in the small tournaments of the Players Tour Championship and never got past round 2. After his 9th year as a professional, he failed to qualify again and therefore ended his professional career.

Dermot McGlinchey is the official coach of the World Snooker Federation .
