William "Will" Borgen (born December 19, 1996 in Moorhead , Minnesota ) is an American ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League since March 2018 and in parallel with their farm team, the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League is used. He also represented Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics .

Career

Will Borgen attended Moorhead High School in his hometown in his youth and played for their ice hockey team in the regional high school league. Towards the end of the 2014/15 season he moved permanently to the Omaha Lancers in the United States Hockey League , the highest junior league in the country, after he had already played a game for the team in November 2014. In Omaha he ended the season with a total of 21 appearances and was then selected in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft in 92nd position by the Buffalo Sabers .

As a result, Borgen enrolled at St. Cloud State University in the fall of 2015 and began studying sports management in his home town of Minnesota. At the same time, he ran from then on for the St. Cloud State Huskies in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) in the game operations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . As a freshman , the defender won the NCHC championship with the Huskies and was also voted into the 2016 NCHC All-Rookie Team of the Year.

After the 2017/18 college season, in which he was named the NCHC's best defensive defender, he signed an entry-level contract with the Buffalo Sabers at the end of March 2018 and a few days later joined their farm team , the Rochester Americans , in the American Hockey League his professional debut. For the Sabers, he was on the ice for the first time in March 2019 in the National Hockey League (NHL).

International

Borgen made his international debut with the U20 national team at the U20 World Cup in 2016 , with the defender winning the bronze medal with the team. At the end of December 2017, he was appointed to the US squad for the 2018 Winter Olympics . He benefited from the decision of the National Hockey League not to interrupt the season for this Olympiad and thus ban their players from participating. He hadn't yet signed a contract with the Buffalo Sabers and was one of four college players on the team. Finally, the American selection finished seventh in Pyeongchang, with Borgen remaining as the only field player without a use.
