The Northern Ireland Trophy 2006 was a snooker tournament of the 2006/07 season , which was held from August 13th to 20th, 2006 in the Waterfront Hall in the Northern Irish capital Belfast . In the previous year, the tournament was held as an invitation tournament, and in 2006 it was held for the first time as a ranking tournament for all 96 professional players.
Last year's title holder Matthew Stevens made it to the round of 16 this time. He lost to Ronnie O'Sullivan , who then moved into the final. But the winner was the Chinese Ding Junhui , who defeated the English with 9: 6. It was Ding's third title win in his career, all three successes were within 17 months.

The Northern Ireland Trophy was one of the easy world ranking tournaments and, along with the Malta Cup, was at the bottom of the prize money list.

Final round
The format was followed by the UK Championship and the Welsh Open. The players from 33rd place in the world rankings played a qualification in Prestatyn for 16 free places in the main tournament. They then played the tournament in Belfast along with the top 32, with the first 16 seeded for the second round.
Round 1
16 players had qualified in three rounds in Prestatyn. They competed against the players from 17th to 32nd place in the world rankings .
Top 32 to the finalThe top 16 of the world rankings were set for round 2 and played against the 16 winners from round 1. finalThe first phase was dominated by Ronnie O'Sullivan , but Ding Junhui was able to equalize a 1: 3 with a series of four frame wins and in turn play out a two-frame lead until the session break. But in the evening session the Englishman struck back and equalized. When the score was 6: 6, it was the Chinese who achieved the 9: 6 win with another run. Ding had only made it into the top 32 in the preseason with two tournament wins and confirmed his advancement to the top of the world with his third title win. It was O'Sullivan's third consecutive defeat in the final.
qualificationThe qualifiers took place from July 29th to 31st, 2006 at the Pontin's Center in Prestatyn . In round 1, the places 65 to 96 of the world rankings played against each other, the winners met in round 2 on places 49 to 64, in round 3 numbers 33 to 48 were added.
