Robert Stephen (born June 27, 1984 ) is a Scottish snooker player from Glasgow . In the second half of the 2000s, he played on the Snooker Main Tour for two years .

Career

At the age of 18, Robert Stephen tried for the first time to qualify for professional snooker via the Challenge Tour . In one tournament he reached round 3 after defeating Stefan Mazrocis , among others . In the other three tournaments he managed only one more victory, so that he was far from a success. After that, he limited himself to amateur snooker and had his most successful season in 2005/06. First he reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship , then fourth place in the U21 World Championship . At the Scottish National Championship he reached the final, which he lost 3: 7 against Fraser Patrick . Despite this defeat he was the best player of the season in Scotland and as number 1 in the national rankings he received a wildcard from the Scottish Association for the professional season 2006/07 .

In his first year on the Main Tour , he had the opportunity to gain match practice in the group stage at the Grand Prix . He won against Mark Joyce and Lee Page , but lost his five remaining games and was eliminated. Then he managed a single win 5-2 against Tian Pengfei at the Welsh Open . At the World Cup he lost very close with 9:10 and 56:65 in the deciding frame against Alfie Burden . He couldn't qualify for another year on the professional tour.

The following year he tried to return via the PIOS tournament series. In the first tournament he reached the round of 16, in another tournament he made it to the semi-finals. But he also lost his opening match four times. In the overall ranking of the 8 tournaments it was only enough for 25th place and therefore not for qualification. But again he was able to convince at the Scottish amateur tournaments and win three national tournaments. As the Scottish number 1 he was nominated again for the professional season 2008/09 by his home association.

This time he made it into the last 64 in the second tournament, the Shanghai Masters , with wins over Scott MacKenzie and Paul Davies . After an opening defeat at the Grand Prix against MacKenzie, he also made it into the third round of the Bahrain Championship , but then missed the UK Championship to get a higher score at a major tournament to improve his world ranking position . He lost 8-9 to Jamie Jones . Reaching the last 64 at the China Open didn't bring him much further either, as he was clearly eliminated 3:10 against Matthew Selt in round 1 of the World Cup . 88th place among 96 professionals meant the end of the Main Tour for the second time. Stephen also gave up his other professional ambitions.
