The musical summer in Winzendorf has been taking place every year since 2017 on the stage next to the disused limestone quarry near Winzendorf-Muthmannsdorf near Wiener Neustadt . The musical summer produces one musical staging with 15 performances per season. The musical summer was launched in 2016 by producers Benedikt Karasek and Jérôme Berg. The directorship has Marika Lichter held. With its 800 seats, the quarry is one of the largest musical venues in Lower Austria. Together with the Winzendorf Festival , the stage will be used throughout the summer.

history

Winzendorf Festival: Karl May Festival

Winzendorf Festival, stage 2012

In 1994, 13 actors from the Karl May Games Gföhl brought the Karl May Festival in Winzendorf to life and adapted the disused quarry to a stage. Brigitte Flechl is entered in the register of associations as the founder of the festival, and Martin Exel is the artistic director of the Karl May Festival. As one of the largest festivals in Lower Austria, the Winzendorf Festival is an important factor in regional cultural development. Exel left the stage for some time in the 90s, but returned in 2004 as commercial director and produced Karl May and western pieces together with artistic director Thomas Koziol. In the first few years there was no artistic director or artistic director, but rather changing directors. From 2007 to 2011 the stage was given to the Gföhler organizer Dr. Anton Rohrmoser leases. Martin Exel bought the site in 2012 and had it completely renovated, the auditorium and stage covered and the western town renewed. The new concept proved to be successful with 12,000 visitors. In 2020 the musical summer in Winzendorf was canceled due to the measures taken against the coronavirus.

Stage and location

The stage is embedded at the foot of the quarry. The quarry has a 1500 m² open-air stage , 797 seats and 200 parking spaces. In 2012 the venue was taken over by Martin Exel, under whose direction the facility was completely refurbished, the auditorium and stage roofed over and the western town renewed. The capacity was reduced from 11,000 to 800 people. Since the renovation, the venue has been the only open-air stage in Lower Austria that is independent of the weather . The modern lighting and sound technology allows productions that do justice to a musical stage. Another special feature of the venue is the cinema seating .

Western town and supporting program

According to owner Martin Exel, the stage in the Winzendorf quarry was the first stage with Westernstadt. Numerous activities for children are offered here, such as face painting, drawing, target shooting, archery, etc. and, in some cases, a preliminary program on the saloon stage. The gastronomy of the western town at the musical summer is based on evaluations of audience surveys from previous seasons as well as on the content of the piece in order to be able to cater to the audience under the catchphrase "experience gastronomy". With this, the stage with Westernstadt is in the tradition of the Lower Austrian Festival, which places great emphasis on an overall concept instead of a purely representative theater. From the train station, the stage and western town can be reached in 5 minutes.

Cooperations with Mohr-Sederl Fruchtwelt, the Schneebergland and the Viennese Alps enable a more comprehensive offer for musical visitors.

Audience research and quality assurance

The producers Berg and Karasek adjust their program to the supply and demand of the culture. For example, quality management processes have to be carried out at the musical summer and audience research methods are used to ensure that quality is maintained.
