3 Musketeers (in the Dutch original 3 Musketeers, de Musical ) is a musical based on the novel "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas . The music and lyrics come from the pen of the brothers Rob and Ferdi Bolland , who had great success in the 1980s with compositions for Falco ( Rock me Amadeus , Jeanny ). André Breedland wrote the script for the musical. Individual songs and lyrics were written by Paul Bogaev , Gerard Cox , Jan-Simon Minkema and Petra van der Eerden . The piece was developed for the Dutch market on behalf of Stage Entertainment and later also played in Germany in different versions.

Summary of the plot

The musical is close to the novel. D'Artagnan sets out for Paris to follow in his father's footsteps and join the musketeers of the Guard . In Paris he befriends the three musketeers Aramis, Athos and Porthos, but also gets involved in the skirmishes between Cardinal Richelieu and King Louis XIII. The arguments between D'Artagnan and his friends with Richelieu's henchmen are fought out in clashing sword fights and, as so often, one or the other woman comes into play. Finally D'Artagnan has to go to England to bring back to France a necklace for the Queen, which she had given her childhood friend Buckingham through an intrigue from Richelieu, and to save her from the threat of being compromised from her husband and the people.

action

1st act

France, 1626: an emcee familiarizes us with the current political situation ( prologue ). Louis XIII is seated on the throne . and his wife Anna, the young couple is still childless. The king is inexperienced, naive, and not very interested in state affairs. Cardinal Richelieu has real power , whose aim is to exterminate the Huguenots and to consolidate the power of the Church.

At the same time in Gascony, in the south of France. The young D'Artagnan sets off for Paris to join the musketeers (the king's bodyguard) like his father once did ( today is the day ). His father gives him a letter of recommendation to Treville, the captain of the musketeers, his first rapier and some good advice, including not to engage in a duel (these were forbidden). In addition, his parents let him have their best (because only) horse in the stable, Pomme de Terre (French: potato). D'Artagnan sets off.

Jump into the Paris area. Milady de Winter from England arrives at a hostel ( Milady is back ). There she meets with Rochefort, the one-eyed captain of the Cardinal's Guard. He asks her what she was able to find out in England: England is preparing for war because the English want to rush to the aid of the Huguenots who are being persecuted in Catholic France. Rochefort forbids Milady from coming to Paris. An argument develops between the two in which D'Artagnan bursts. Trying to be a gentleman, he wants to protect Milady from Rochefort. In a brief skirmish, he breaks his sword and tears up the letter of recommendation sent to Treville when the naive D'Artagnan confides in him. In the ensuing battle, the innkeeper knocks down D'Artagnan, and Rochefort leaves Milady with the warning not to come to Paris until the cardinal orders.

Paris : the city wakes up in the morning. D'Artagnan is also there now. A young woman asks him about his horse, and D'Artagnan immediately falls in love with her. When he asks her name, Pomme de Terre is stolen. D'Artagnan tries to pursue the thieves, but runs into a man. D'Artagnan apologizes, but not with clever words ( "I was in a hurry. But you are right. That is by no means a reason to run up an old man, is it." ). The man feels hurt in his honor and challenges D'Artagnan to a duel the next morning at six behind the Carmelite monastery in Luxembourg. D'Artagnan has another unfortunate clash with another. Again, his excuse is not very cleverly chosen ( “With such a lush hit area I would be even more affected if I hadn't met you.” ) And so he has the next duel date at seven the next morning. At the end he bursts into a coquetry between a young woman and a third man in which he picks up the handkerchief that was intended for the other. His reply "What does a real man want with a lace handkerchief?" Brings him his third duel at eight o'clock.

In the cathedral the cardinal prays ( Oh Lord ). Rochefort comes and reports what Milady has told him. In the Louvre, Richelieu in conversation with the royal couple. The king gives Richelieu a free hand. He asks Anna for help. Before her marriage, she had an affair with the Duke of Buckingham, the English premier. Richelieu asks her to summon Buckingham to Paris for peace negotiations. His real plans are different, the king should not find out about them for the time being.

The next morning behind the Carmelite monastery in Luxembourg. D'Artagnan waits for his opponent to duel and reads a letter from his mother, in which she informs him that his father has died ( father ). When the first man finally comes and introduces his seconds, they turn out to be D'Artagnan's remaining opponents of the duel. The first duel begins, but is interrupted by Rochefort, who mainly wants to arrest D'Artagnan's opponent, as duels are prohibited. When the three of them take off their coats to fight, D'Artagnan discovers that they are wearing the uniform of the Musketeers. Nevertheless, the three are inferior to the eight cardinal guardsmen. D'Artagnan intervenes. Rochefort's men are killed, Rochefort's arm injured. The three musketeers introduce themselves: Athos (the “old father”), Porthos (with the “lush hit area”) and Aramis (the “heartthrob”). When D'Artagnan introduces himself, they tell him that they knew his father as a musketeer. He was released after he gouged out the eye in the Rochefort fight. The three explain to D'Artagnan about the political quarrels and recommend him to come to the Louvre the next day , where the king is giving a speech. ( One for all )

The next day. Before Ludwig, Richelieu expresses his doubts about Anna's loyalty to France. Rochefort bursts into the king's address to the musketeers and the cardinal's guard to denounce Athos, Porthos and Aramis for the duel. However, D'Artagnan, who has also come, supports the Musketeers and says Rochefort started. The king is not worth the excitement, he only urges the musketeers to try out their fencing skills elsewhere. D'Artagnan sees the young girl from Paris again, but cannot speak to her: in the scene she is standing directly behind the queen.

Milady comes to Richelieu, who has ignored his instruction. She reports that Buckingham is in Paris, in an auberge on Rue de Vaugirard . In the following conversation we learn why Milady is dependent on Richelieu: She has a brand on her shoulder, the lily, the symbol for a prostitute and Milady is hoping for her good name to be restored. Even if Milady says it was rape, Richelieu wants to keep this option open. Then he leaves her alone. In the following song, Milady annoys men about them.

In the Louvre. Anna sends her maid, D'Artagnan's secret love, to Rue de Vaugirad to pick up Buckingham. You can tell from the way she talks about him that she still loves him. The three musketeers sit in a cabaret with D'Artagnan and have fun ( so in secret ). D'Artagnan tells of his love. Porthos and Aramis are happy for him, but Athos has only contempt for love. When D'Artagnan asks him why, Athos tells the following story: A friend of his was in love with a girl and married her. At night he always considered her request and never lit a light. But one night in the full moon he saw the reason: she had a lily on her shoulder. He then disregarded her. But he still loves her. In the following song, angel made of crystal, the viewer notices: The friend is Athos himself. D'Artagnan does not allow himself to be disturbed by the story. Then his secret lover appears and he finally finds out her name: Constance. She picks up Buckingham. D'Artagnan learns from James, Buckingham's butler, the reason for meeting Queen Anna. In the end he dreams of his love ( Constance )

Buckingham and Anna meet in their apartments ( Le temps ). Anna asks Buckingham to refrain from war with France. In order to strengthen her bond, she gives Buckingham part of her crown jewels, a diamond necklace. The conversation is listened to by Milady. Constance comes. The three women sing about their loved ones ( Who can be without love? )

Milady reports to Richelieu what she has heard and is instructed to arrest Buckingham. But Buckingham is defended by James, D'Artagnan and the Musketeers and is able to flee with the diamonds. D'Artagnan follows Constance. She returns to her fiancé Bonacieux, whom she only wants to marry because he has given her the position in the palace and has paid her poor parents a high bride price. D'Artagnan bursts in and fights Bonacieux, whom he throws down the stairs. Constance and D'Artagnan confess their mutual love ( everything )

A festival to mark the opening of the hunting season ( The Hunt ). Milady and Rochefort have to admit to Richelieu that Buckingham escaped, blaming each other. Richelieu orders them to arrest D'Artagnan and his friends whom he considers his most dangerous enemies. In his address he announced the celebration of the 25th birthday of the king and asked Anna to wear the crown jewels. Anna panics and confides in Constance. She suggests sending D'Artagnan and his friends to get the necklace. They accept the order and set off. ( One for all, Finale 1st act )

2nd act

The emcee summons his audience and tells of D'Artagnan's trip to England ( prologue 2nd act ). Chased by Rochefort, one after the other is arrested: Porthos confronts Rochefort and his men to stop them, Aramis is shot from his horse, Athos sweeps a branch from his horse when he turns around. Only D'Artagnan manages to escape. In the end, Rochefort and Richelieu burst into the performance and close the small theater. This scene is the occasion for a short and amusing battle of words between the conférencier and Rochefort or Richelieu.

On the English Channel, D'Artagnan on his crossing ( The Crossing ). A storm makes it difficult for the small boat to travel and finally sinks just off the coast.

In Paris. Rochefort savored his triumph over his prisoners Porthos, Athos and Aramis. He wants to take her with the rest of the army to La Rochelle, the center of the Huguenots. The three decide to make a good face to the bad game in order to flee at the first opportunity and find D'Artagnan ( One for all (recapitulation) ).

Before La Rochelle. Milady has to confess to Richelieu that D'Artagnan escaped. Richelieu sends Milady to Calais with a charter (the bearer of the letter is free to do anything, he cannot be held accountable) to take the diamonds from D'Artagnan. She is also supposed to kidnap Constance in order to have some leverage against D'Artagnan. He wants to compromise Anna before the king because he hopes that this will give him even more power over Ludwig. He warns Milady that this is her last chance. But the apparently unscrupulous cardinal also has doubts. He believes the power of the church also ensures faith in God, but does not seem to be sure of his action ( not made of stone ).

D'Artagnan is in England with Buckingham. After some hesitation, he hands over the diamonds, but the next thing he calls the Minister of War over. D'Artagnan is confused: If his mission is unsuccessful, Anna will be compromised before the king, if he is successful, England will declare war on France ( father (reprise) ).

In Paris. Ludwig prays when Anna comes. She asks him to speak to her, but the king no longer trusts her ( no shared suffering ) and leaves her standing. Constance comes and cheers the queen up a little. Then she prays for D'Artagnan ( God smiles at us ). Milady arrives, kidnaps her and has her locked up in the Carmelite monastery in Luxembourg. Then she travels to Calais.

In La Rochelle, Richelieu is preparing for war ( believe me! ). Rochefort reports on Constance's kidnapping. The three musketeers hear this too and flee. In Calais, Milady discovers D'Artagnan sleeping in a hostel. She first tries to steal the box that contains the diamonds, but D'Artagnan wakes up. In battle he discovers the lily and knows that she must be the woman Athos spoke of. Milady knocks him down and disappears with the box. The next morning, D'Artagnan is looking for a way to Paris. He asks God for help and is promptly approached by three monks. These turn out to be Porthos, Athos and Aramis. D'Artagnan admits that Milady stole the box, but that he had the diamonds in his pocket. They steal a car and make their way to Paris ( Today is the day (recapitulation) ).

Milady is already at Richelieu's and gives him the box full of hope. However, this is empty. Richelieu sends Milady away with a promise never to restore her honor. The angry Milady wants revenge on Constance. In the monastery, disguised as a nun, she brings her a poisoned potion. The two talk when Constance collapses. Here come the Musketeers and D'Artagnan. Porthos chases Milady, who tried to escape, and catches her. But help comes too late for Constance. She dies in D'Artagnan's arms ( Everything (recapitulation) )

On the tower of the monastery. Milady tries to save her life by trying to convince Athos that she still loves him ( where is summer? ). But Athos can no longer forgive the murderess and leaves the decision to D'Artagnan. When he no longer responds to Milady's requests, she throws herself from the tower. Athos is still devastated. D'Artagnan arrives, very sad, but the two manage to build each other up. Then they see the fireworks that announce the ball and make their way to the Louvre.

September 27, 1626. The ball begins ( Vive le Roi ). Richelieu orders Rochefort to post guards everywhere to prevent D'Artagnan from arriving in time. Then he congratulates the king, tears a scarf from the queen's neck, revealing the absence of the diamond necklace. Then D'Artagnan comes and hands this over. When the Cardinal Guard rushes at him, the three musketeers come to his aid. When the Guard is defeated, Rochefort and D'Artagnan fight. D'Artagnan defeats Rochefort, but spares his life. Then the musketeers expose the cardinal's intrigue before the king, as evidence they show him the charter issued by Richelieu. The king had the cardinal and Rochefort arrested, disbanded the cardinal's guard and returned the musketeers to his command. He sends Athos, Porthos and Aramis to England to start peace negotiations. At the end he fulfills D'Artagnan's greatest wish, appoints him musketeer and gives him his father's rapier, which he had once given to Athos for safekeeping ( one for all (Finale 2nd act) ).

Father (epilogue) shows D'Artagnan at his father's grave. The three musketeers are with him and now finally accept D'Artagnan into their circle.

Berlin

After the success of the musical in Holland, Stage Entertainment also selected it as the successor musical for Les Misérables in the Theater des Westens in Berlin : The premiere took place on April 6, 2005, the musical in a revised form, but still with a few presented faces known from Holland: Above all Pia Douwes, who, like in Rotterdam, also took on the role of Milady in Berlin. The translation is by Wolfgang Adenberg (lyrics) and Ruth Deny (book). But Paul Eenens was again responsible for the direction, just as Yan Tax created the costumes for Berlin and Rotterdam, according to his own statement, "Dreams of 2005 about the 17th century". The last performance with a different cast took place on June 25, 2006.

Premiere cast in Berlin:

For the German performance, some songs were deleted (see Rotterdam), but new ones were also composed.

Act 1 prologue, Milady is back, Le Temps, so completely secret, angel of crystal

Act 2 prologue

Stuttgart

On November 12, 2006, the curtain rose for the first time for the three musketeers in the Apollo Theater of the SI Center in Stuttgart . In Stuttgart, too, Pia Douwes can be seen again as Milady de Winter and Marc Clear as Athos. Cardinal Richelieu is played by Ethan Freeman . The denier took place on January 27, 2008.

Premiere cast in Stuttgart:

The musical was edited for the performance in Stuttgart . Here are the most extravagant changes: In Act 2 Constance's "God smiles at us" is omitted and is replaced by a reprise of "Everything". Milady de Winter's earlier solo “Where is the summer?” Is expanded into a duet between Milady and Athos. Another noticeable change in the spoken text can be seen in the Milady suicide scene. When Athos is asked: "Make your judgment!", The other musketeers' answer is no longer "Death!" As in the Berlin and Rotterdam performances, but rather mildly "Guilty!"

Licensed productions

The university group "Musical Inc." of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz received the performance rights for May and June 2009 in a special agreement from Stage Entertainment; Stage Entertainment did not begin the regular allocation of the performance rights until August 2009. The first licensees were the Wetzlar Festival with the Goetheschule Wetzlar and the Tecklenburg open-air theater . The Austrian premiere took place on July 23, 2010 on the Staatz Felsenbühne . From October 2013 to February 2014 the musical should be shown as a tour version in 26 German cities. In some cities (e.g. Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Cologne, Aalen) events were canceled due to “technical problems”, and viewers also complained about massive technical malfunctions at events that had taken place. The tour was eventually canceled. From November 20, 2014, the failed tour should be rescheduled under the leadership of the same licensee, but it was canceled again after seven performances.

Tecklenburg

The musical was performed for the first time open air in Germany on June 19, 2010 at the Freilichtspiele Tecklenburg. The director is Marc Clear, who also takes on the role of Athos, which he previously played in Berlin and Stuttgart. Thomas Hohler as D'Artagnan, Enrico de Pieri as Porthos, Jens Janke as Aramis and Stefan Poslovski as James / Conferencier were also part of the premiere cast in Stuttgart.
