Pia Douwes (actually: P etronella I rene A llegonda Douwes ; born August 5, 1964 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch musical performer who became known in particular for the role of " Elisabeth " in the musical of the same name , which she performed in Germany, Austria and in the Netherlands embodied. She achieved international fame for her role as Velma Kelly in the musical Chicago (performances on Broadway , West End and in the Netherlands). This makes her one of the most successful musical actors in Europe alongside Ute Lemper , Anna Montanaro and Willemijn Verkaik .

biography

Pia Douwes was born to an art dealer and social worker and has three brothers. At the age of 19 she was despite the lack of education in the London dance school Brooklyn School of Ballet accepted and got there 1983-1986 trained as a ballet dancer. In 1984 she attended a musical course in Vienna led by Susi Nicoletti and Sam Cayne .

In 1986 she got her first role in the musical Little Shop of Horrors in Vienna. After further smaller roles, the first major production followed in 1987 with Cats in Amsterdam. Her breakthrough came in 1992 with the lead role in the world premiere of the musical Elisabeth in Vienna.

This was followed by other leading and supporting roles in various musicals and tour productions. She has also appeared as a soloist at concerts and gala evenings at the Volksoper Vienna and as an interpreter of Cole Porter songs.

2007 brought Pia Douwes her first solo CD with their version of the December Songs , one of Franz Schubert's Winterreise inspired German initial reception of Maury Yestons song cycle December Songs , on the market and performed in several solo concerts. In 2008 she was a member of the jury for the musical casting shows Ich Tarzan, Du Jane! ( Sat.1 ) and Op zoek naar Evita (Netherlands). She has since worked on over 25 CD productions and guide me Musical - Workshops . In 2012/13 she was in Stuttgart in the role of Mrs Danvers in the musical Rebecca . In 2013 she played in Kramer vs. Kramer in the Netherlands. From July 16, 2013, she played the main female role (Claire Zachanassian) in The Old Lady's Visit at the Thunerseespiele , in Germany Douwes played mother Diana in the German-language premiere of Next to Normal in Fürth. In 2014 Douwes played the role of Claire Zachanassian again for The Visit of the Old Lady , this time for the Austrian premiere at the Ronacher in Vienna . In the 2016/2017 season she appeared at the Dortmund Opera and Bonn Opera in the role of Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber 's Sunset Boulevard .
