2009

The Grand Prix 2008 , after the sponsor also the Royal London Watches Grand Prix , was a snooker tournament of the Snooker Main Tour , which took place from October 11th to 19th, 2008 in the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Center in Glasgow . After two years in Aberdeen , the tournament moved again, but stayed in Scotland. After two years with a group phase, the tournament mode was changed back to a purely elimination tournament.

Defending champion Marco Fu failed in the round of 16 against world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan . The winner was John Higgins who, with his fourth title win, caught up with the sole record winner Stephen Hendry . The Scot defeated Ryan Day 9-7.

Prize money / world ranking points

The total prize money was slightly higher than in 2007. After the tournament changed the mode, the prize money structure also changed. The top 4 continued to receive the same prize money, it rose a little up to 16th place and it was redistributed for the other places. The number of world ranking points remained the same for all top 16 players, the other places were reassessed.

final

John Higgins entered the final with 18 world rankings, including three Grand Prix wins. His opponent Ryan Day was in a final for the third time and had lost the two times before. The experienced Scot also took the lead right away and extended the lead to 5: 2 by the end of the session. In Session 2 he even increased to 7: 2, then Day started a race to catch up and came within one frame to 7: 6. But Higgins did not allow the equalizer and finally finished to 9: 7. Before him, only fellow countryman Stephen Hendry had won the tournament four times. For Ryan Day the success was one of the most successful times of his career, at the end of the season he moved up to 6th place in the world rankings.
