The 1996 Grand Prix was a snooker tournament of the 1996/97 season that was held from October 16-27, 1996 at the International Conference Center in Bournemouth . After reading farewell in 1993, the southern English coastal city was the third venue in three years. After Škoda left , the tournament had to do without a name sponsor for some time from this year on.
The Scottish defending champion Stephen Hendry experienced an opening defeat this time. His Scottish compatriot Euan Henderson reached a professional final for the only time in his career. But the winner was Mark Williams , who won the final 9: 5. The Welshman had only moved up to the top 16 in the world rankings this season after winning the Welsh Open . The Grand Prix was his second ranking title.
Final round
64 players competed in the main tournament in Preston . The top 32 of the world rankings were set. The 32 players who had prevailed in the qualification were drawn to them.
There was a change in the game mode: Up until the previous year, both the semi-finals and the final were played as best-of-17 games (9 winning frames). From this year on, only Best of 11 was played in the semi-finals.
