The 1997 Grand Prix was a snooker tournament of the 1997/98 season that was held in Bournemouth from October 14th to 26th, 1997 . The Bournemouth International Center hosted the tournament for the second year running. The 14th edition of the Grand Prix remained without a sponsor for the second time.
In round 2 it was already the end of the line for the defending champion Mark Williams . Came into the final John Higgins , the 1994 had won before, and Dominic Dale , the first time ever a finale reached. The underdog won his first title with a 9-6 win.
Main tournament
The top 32 of the world rankings were set for round 1. The 32 players who had prevailed in a qualifying round were drawn to them.
final
In five years on the Main Tour, Dominic Dale had never made it further than the round of 16, at the Grand Prix he was only in the main tournament for the second time this year. The world number two John Higgins , on the other hand, had already reached the final of the Grand Prix for the third time. But the finale got off to a surprising start when Dale fought his way through the first four frames and won all four. But in the second half of the session, Higgins was able to limit the damage and reduce it to 3: 5 again. In the evening he got one frame closer to Dale, but every time he shortened, the Welshman immediately restored the 2-frame gap. That went up to the score of 8: 6, which Dale made with a 120-point break. Frame 15 had to be won by Higgins, but again it was Dominic Dale who made the decisive break and with it his first title win as a professional.
