The Professional Players Tournament 1982 was a professional snooker tournament that influenced the world rankings for the 1982/83 season . It was held from 11 to 22 October 1982 after the International Open as the second world ranking tournament that was not a World Cup in the Astra International Snooker Club in Birmingham , England . The winner was Ray Reardon from Welsh , who defeated the Englishman Jimmy White 10: 5 in the final. His compatriot Willie Thorne played the highest break of the tournament with a 135 break.
Prize money
Since the tournament had no sponsor, it only had a prize money pot of £ 31,500 and thus a prize money pot that was only about a third as much prize money as at the last World Cup.

Tournament course
Since the tournament comprised a field of 65 players, Chris Ross and the amateur Jack Karnehm competed against each other in a pre-qualifying, whereby Ross won through a task without a fight on the part of Karnehm. The remaining 63 participants and Chris Ross then competed against each other from the round of the last 64 in the knockout system , with each other up to and including the quarter-finals in the best of 9 frames mode and in the semi-finals and in the final in the best of 19 frames mode was played. In the round of the last 64, one player from the top 33, i.e. the players on no shared place, played against a player on the 34th place in the world rankings, which was shared several times.
With Ray Reardon from Welsh , Alex Higgins from Northern Ireland , Cliff Thorburn from Canada and Steve Davis from England , all players in the top four of the world rankings were originally represented until Davis gave up his game without a fight.
final
The six-time world champion Ray Reardon from Wales took over the world rankings from Cliff Thorburn at the end of last season . During the tournament he had defeated several top players with Alex Higgins , Bill Werbeniuk and Eddie Charlton before he met the Englishman Jimmy White in the final . White had also knocked several top players out of the tournament, including defeating Dennis Taylor and Terry Griffiths before he reached the final with a 10: 4 over John Virgo .
After White took a 2-0 lead, Reardon equalized with a 53 break and took the lead thanks to a 132 break. White managed to equalize directly, but Reardon then took a 5-3 lead before White came up to 5-4. With a 53 break, Reardon restored the old gap before White shortened again. But Reardon extended his lead beyond the reach and won the 15th frame with 60:52 and thus both the match and the tournament.
