Pierre "Perrie" Mans (born October 14, 1940 in Johannesburg ) is a former South African snooker player who was active as a professional player between 1970 and 1991 for 21 years. After he had won the South African Snooker Championship in 1960 and the South African Professional Championship 19 times in the following years and during his professional career , he became a professional player in 1970. By the end of the decade he rose to the top of the world and, after being runner-up in 1978, took second place in the snooker world rankings in the following season , while at the beginning of 1979 he won a Triple Crown tournament for the only time with the Masters . But by the end of the decade, Mans gradually lost ground on the world rankings and, despite a brief return to the world rankings, ended his professional career a few seasons later.

Career

Mans, whose real name instead of "Perrie" Pierre, was established in 1940 as the son of Peter Mans , which was also snooker player and 1950 the quarterfinals of the World Snooker Championship reached in Johannesburg born and began the snooker game at the club his father. At the age of 19, Mans won the South African Snooker Championship , whereupon he won the South African Professional Championship for the first time five years later . He held the same title until 1978, when he defeated Silvino Francisco 9: 6, and from 1980 to 1984 and finally 1989, where he lost 7:10 to Jimmy van Rensberg in the 1984 final . So he won the tournament 19 times.

First professional years

For the 1970/71 season , Mans became a professional player and completed his first professional games as part of the World Snooker Championship held in Australia , but was eliminated without a win in the group stage. After a break, he achieved his first professional win at the 1973 World Snooker Championship with a 9: 2 over Ron Gross , but then lost to Eddie Charlton 16: 8 . Prior to his quarter-final defeat by Rex Williams in the World Cup the next year Mans managed a victory over the then two-time world champion before John Spencer , he while in the World Snooker Championship of the 1974-75 season against Dennis Taylor lost his opening match. As a result, he was ranked 13th on the Order of Merit the following season.

Rise to the top of the world

Also in the 1975/76 season , Mans only took part in the World Snooker Championship , defeating Graham Miles and Jim Meadowcroft and losing in the semifinals to later defending champion Ray Reardon . As a result, Mans finished seventh on the snooker world rankings, which were set up for the first time at the end of the season and are valid for the following season .

In the course of the following season , Mans lost both the Masters and the Snooker World Championship his respective opening game and apart from that took part with some success in the World Professional Matchplay Championship , the Pontins Professional and the Pontins Spring Open . He also defeated the Pot Black Ray Reardon, Fred Davis and Willie Thorne , where he finally won his first professional title with a 90:21 win over Doug Mountjoy . Nevertheless, he slipped three places on the world rankings due to his opening defeat at the snooker world championship, the only tournament that had an impact on the world rankings at the time.

In the 1977/78 season , Mans limited his tournament participation to a total of three tournaments, with his results at the Pontins Professional not enough for the final and he lost his opening game at the Pontins Spring Open . In contrast, he won at the snooker world championship victories over the English and in parts leading players in the world John Barrie , John Spencer , Graham Miles and Fred Davis , whereby he had reached the final of the world championship. In this he was defeated, despite two lead times, 18:25 to Welsh Ray Reardon , who won his sixth and last world title. As a result, he climbed to second place in the world rankings.

More years in the top 16

Despite three initial defeats at Holsten Lager International , the World Snooker Championship and the Pontins Spring Open, as well as participating in the Pontins Professional without a win , the remainder of the 1978/79 season was extremely successful for Mans . At the beginning of the season he defeated his compatriot Silvino Francisco with a 9: 5 in the finals of the South African Professional Championship and then reached the semi-finals of the Pot Black Cup . Apart from that, he defeated Cliff Thorburn and Ray Reardon at the Masters and won as a result with an 8-4 victory over Alex Higgins in the final his only title at a tournament of the Triple Crown . He didn't play a single break of over 50 points during the entire tournament. But due to his poor performance at the World Snooker Championship, Mans slipped five places to seventh on the world rankings for the following season.

In contrast, Mans lost a large part of his opening games during the 1979/80 season : The season began with defeats at the Kronenbräu 1308 Classic , Limosin International , the South African Professional Championship and an elimination in the group stage of the Pot Black Cup and continued continued at the end of the season with defeats to Alex Higgins at the Masters and the World Snooker Championships and against Eddie Charlton at the Pontins Professional . Apart from that, Mans could only defeat Bill Werbeniuk and John Spencer at the Padmore / Super Crystalate International, in addition to one game in the Pot Black group stage and at the Pontins Spring Open , before losing to Alex Higgins in the final. Despite these results, Mans was able to keep his seventh place on the world rankings.

In the following two seasons, however, Mans reduced the number of his tournament entries to only two pieces each. While he was defeated in the 1980/81 season after a victory over Steve Davis at the Masters in the quarterfinals Cliff Thorburn and lost his opening game to Bill Werbeniuk at the Snooker World Championship , he reached the quarterfinals in the 1981/82 season with a victory over Tony Meo of the Masters or the last sixteen of the Snooker World Championship and was eliminated there against Steve Davis and Jimmy White, respectively . In the world rankings he had temporarily slipped to 15th place, but eventually improved to eleventh place.

Down on rank 36

With the 1982/83 season , the number of Mans' tournament participations rose to three, with which he took part in all three ranking tournaments of the season, since from this point in time, in addition to the snooker world championship, other tournaments gradually got influence on the world rankings. Although he won his opening game in all three tournaments, he had to admit defeat to the Canadian Kirk Stevens in the round of 16 of the International Open and the Snooker World Championship as well as to Mark Wildman in the round of the last 32 of the Professional Players Tournament . As a result, he lost six places on the world rankings and was ranked 17th for the first time in his career outside of the first sixteen places, which meant he had to qualify for participation in the main round of a tournament.

During the following season , Mans again only took part in two tournaments. In addition, he lost his opening game at both the International Open and the World Snooker Championship , where he got a white wash from John Parrott after a 4: 5 against Mike Watterson in the latter tournament . After this was repeated with three opening games in the 1984/85 season , he slipped from 24th to 30th in the world rankings.

In the 1985/86 season , the number of Mans' tournament participations rose to six, which he participated in all ranked tournaments of the season. However, he lost his opening game in the first three tournaments before he was able to win a professional game again after almost three years at the Classic against Martin Smith . As a result, he also won at the British Open against Wayne Jones and in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship against Les Dodd his respective opening game, but in all three tournaments he was eliminated in the following round Joe Johnson , Willie Thorne and respectively against Doug Mountjoy . Nevertheless, he lost six more places on the world rankings, which has now led him to 36.

Last professional years

At the beginning of the 1986/87 season , Mans lost 6-7 against François Ellis his opening game at the South African Professional Championship , where he did not appear in the next three opening games and thus gave up without a fight. He then lost his two other opening games of the season with 0: 5 against Mario Morra at the Classic and 2: 5 against Glen Wilkinson at the British Open and thus lost his world rankings for the first time since the introduction of the world rankings, which means he is now an unsettled professional player was looking at.

In the next two seasons 1987/88 and 1988/89 Mans took - in spite of the potential participation in other tournaments - only one tournament, the South African Professional Championship . While he lost his opening game against Jimmy van Rensberg in 1988 , he defeated Derek Mienie and Mike Hines in 1989 to finally win a professional tournament with an 8: 5 win over Robbie Grace . At the end of the 1988/89 season, Mans finally ended his professional career after 19 years, even though he was ranked 160 in the world between the 1990/91 and 1991/92 seasons . The exact dates of Mans' end of career vary between the ends of the 1986/87 , 1988/89 and - including a previous interruption - 1991/92 seasons . In 1997 Mans took part as an amateur for the last time in a professional game when he lost his opening game against Joe Johnson at Seniors Pot Black with 30:87 on points .

Style of play

The left-hander Mans had a graceful style of play despite a positional play that left something to be desired due to his long-ball matched game. Steve Davis wrote in his autobiography that Mans was known as a "Potter with no real ball control".
