The 1978 World Snooker Championship took place from April 17, 1978 to April 29, 1978. The venue was the Crucible Theater in Sheffield. The 1978 World Cup was the first to be televised daily by the BBC .
Ray Reardon prevailed against Perrie Mans in the final and received a prize of £ 7,500. The total prize money distributed increased by £ 7,000 to £ 24,000 compared to the previous year. Ray Reardon became the oldest world champion at the age of 45 years and 6 months, and Fred Davis was the oldest semi-finalist at 64 years and 8 months.
The highest break of the tournament was achieved by John Spencer with 138 points, who, as the reigning world champion, was eliminated in the first round against Perrie Mans.
