The 2006 World Snooker Championship took place from April 15, 2006 to May 1, 2006 at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield and marked the end of the 2005/06 snooker season . There was a change in the main sponsor for this World Cup. The previous sponsor Embassy withdrew, the new sponsor was 888.com . Graeme Dott from Scotland won the title with an 18:14 final victory over Peter Ebdon .
The defending champion was Shaun Murphy . Peter Ebdon threw the reigning world champion out of the running for the world championship for the second year in a row (13: 7 against Murphy in the quarterfinals; 2005: 13:11 against Ronnie O'Sullivan in the quarterfinals).
The 5:10 loss to Neil Robertson was the last match for Paul Hunter as a professional. The cancer-suffering snooker player never came back on the main tour and died on October 9, 2006. Marco Fu was the first Asian player since 1997 to reach the semi-finals of a world championship.
