The 1980 World Snooker Championship was held from April 22 to May 5, 1980 at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield .
In the final, Cliff Thorburn beat Alex Higgins with 18:16 . The final frames of the final were overshadowed by the hostage-taking at the Iranian embassy in London in 1980 . The Welsh title holder Terry Griffiths was eliminated in the round of 16 against Steve Davis .
The total prize money was almost doubled compared to the previous year from 35,000 to 60,000 pounds. The field of participants in the final round would be expanded from 16 to 24.
