The 1953 World Snooker Championship was officially known as the Professional Matchplay Championship ( PMC ) and was the second edition of this tournament since 1952. It took place in the " Houldsworth Hall " in Manchester , where the year before the rival Billiards Association and Control Council (BACC) had held its world championship.
After a dispute between some professional players and the BACC in 1952 , Fred Davis founded the Professional Matchplay Championship (PMC) in the same year . After both associations hosted a world championship in 1952, the BACC withdrew from hosting the world championships in 1953 and the Professional Matchplay Championship was rated as a world championship until 1957.
For Jackie Rea from Northern Ireland , after 1949 and 1952, it was the third participation in a world championship.
In the final, defending champions Fred Davis and Walter Donaldson from Scotland faced each other for the seventh time in a row . Davis secured, with a 37:34, the fifth victory over the Scots and thus the fifth world title.
The Englishman John Pulman scored the highest break with 133 points.
