The 1997 World Snooker Championship took place from April 19 to May 5, 1997 at the Crucible Theater in Sheffield and marked the end of the 1996/97 snooker season .

Defending champion was Stephen Hendry from Scotland , who made it to the final again this time. There he had to admit defeat to Ken Doherty with 12:18. With Doherty, a player from the Republic of Ireland won the World Snooker Championship for the first and so far only time .
