In the 19th century the community had over 1000 inhabitants at times; As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants then fell continuously to the lows in the 1960s and 1970s.

economy

For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived from agriculture; the soils of the municipality belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales of expensive brandies have tended to decline in recent decades, so that viticulture no longer plays an important role. Income from tourism, in particular the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ), has played a not insignificant role for the income of the municipal treasury since the 1960s.

history

In medieval documents the place is mentioned under the names Fescobronna (956), Foscobrona (1107), Fuscobruna (1202) or Fulcobruna (1298). The former Benedictine priory Chasseignes stood in the hamlet of Chassagne .

Ruins of the Notre-Dame de l'Houme church
  • The unadorned parish church of Saint-Maurice dates from the 12th century; from this time, however - after being destroyed during the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) - only parts of the west tower are preserved. When the church was rebuilt, the outer walls were stabilized by powerful buttresses; the mighty west tower was given the character of a watchtower and defensive tower. The portal was added in the 16th century.
  • The remains of the early Gothic church Notre-Dame de l'Houme ( 45 ° 32 '28 "  N , 0 ° 11' 15"  O ) from the 13th century were already 1926 as monument historique recognized.
  • The Logis de Pelle Grain de Calais from the time of the Renaissance only minor parts are also obtained.
