Saint-Michel (formerly Saint-Michel-d'Entraygues ) is a municipality with 3,227 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the western French department of Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .

location

Saint-Michel is located on the south bank of the Charente in the cultural landscape of the Angoumois at an altitude of about 50 m above sea level. d. M. and is only about 6 km (driving distance) to the west from the city of Angoulême .

history

A few prehistoric finds have been made in the area of ​​the municipality. The town's church was built in 1137 by the former abbot Lambert of the Benedictine monastery of La Couronne , about six kilometers to the south, who had been consecrated bishop of Angoulême a year earlier . Nearby was a cemetery where the Santiago pilgrims found their final resting place.
