Saint-Michel (formerly Saint-Michel-d'Entraygues ) is a municipality with 3,227 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the western French department of Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
location
Saint-Michel is located on the south bank of the Charente in the cultural landscape of the Angoumois at an altitude of about 50 m above sea level. d. M. and is only about 6 km (driving distance) to the west from the city of Angoulême .

Due to the proximity to the city of Angoulême and comparatively low property prices, the population of the municipality increased to over 3,000 in the 20th century.
economy
If the inhabitants of the place lived for centuries from the yields of their fields and gardens, then in the late Middle Ages and in the early modern period some water mills (also for paper production) were operated on the river (see coat of arms). The small area of the municipality is almost completely built up; Small trade, handicrafts and smaller service companies determine the economy of the place nowadays.
history
A few prehistoric finds have been made in the area of the municipality. The town's church was built in 1137 by the former abbot Lambert of the Benedictine monastery of La Couronne , about six kilometers to the south, who had been consecrated bishop of Angoulême a year earlier . Nearby was a cemetery where the Santiago pilgrims found their final resting place.
Attractions
- The the Archangel Michael consecrated church of St-Michel , a Romanesque central building from the 12th century.
- The Logis de Puygrelier originally dates from the 16th century, but was subsequently rebuilt several times. A stair tower with a watchtower ( échauguette ) is still preserved .
