In the 19th century, the place usually had between 500 and 600 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the increasing mechanization of agriculture , the population continuously declined to the current lows in the 20th century.
economy
The small town of Montignac-le-Coq has lived from agriculture and viticulture for centuries - the soils are part of the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but the vineyards have been significantly reduced in recent decades as a result of the sales crisis for wine. The income from tourism (rental of holiday homes) plays a not insignificant role in the economic life of the municipality.
Attractions
- The unadorned apse and the crossing tower of the single-nave parish church ( Église de l'Exaltation de-la-Sainte-Croix ) are still attributed to the end of the 11th century - despite the precisely hewn stones in the lower part. When the crossing tower collapsed, the apse was also affected, so that its upper part was supplemented with rubble stone masonry. The west facade and the windows of the nave were completely renewed in the 19th century.
- At the entrance to the village there is a covered fountain, which is modeled after a field stone hut.
- There is a hoofbuck nearby , which was used to fix the animals during hoof care or shoeing .
