In the first half of the 19th century, the community still had well over 1000 inhabitants, but the population fell continuously to the lows of the last decades as a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture .

economy

For centuries the people of Rougnac lived on the principles of self-sufficiency from agriculture; Markets were way too far away. The soils of the commune are largely forested ( Forêt d'Horte ); In theory, however, they still belong to the Bons Bois of the Cognac wine-growing region , but sales for expensive brandies and even for wine have tended to decline in recent decades, so that viticulture no longer plays a role. Income from tourism, in particular the rental of holiday apartments ( gîtes ), has become much more important since the 1960s.

history

The parish church, which partly dates back to pre-Romanesque times, points to a long period of settlement in the place. In the Middle Ages, a branch line of the Way of St. James led through the town.

Attractions

Église Saint-Pierre
Nave
  • Parts of the nave walls of the parish church of Saint-Pierre , made of largely unworked quarry stones , date from pre-Romanesque times. A large, sharpened at the apex chancel arch separates the area covered by an open wooden roof nave of the newly designed in the 15th century with a flat closing zweifenstrigen and rip vaulted apse provided choir area . On the outside, the church was raised by a crossing tower that was added at about the same time . An elongated, barrel-vaulted lower church , which was a private chapel for the lords of the Château du Repaire, stretches under the entire length of the church, made of precisely hewn limestone and therefore possibly only attributed to the 13th century . Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 2001 .
  • A little outside the town ( 45 ° 32 ′ 27 ″  N , 0 ° 21 ′ 56 ″  E ) is the Château du Repaire, dominated by a mighty late medieval round tower . The idyllic ensemble of buildings is privately owned and has been recognized as a monument historique since 1997 .
