Townscape with Saint-Hilaire church

Nonac is a municipality with 281 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Charente in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine in France .

location

Nonac is located in the south-east of the historic province and cultural landscape of the Angoumois , part of the Charente countryside . It is about 35 kilometers (driving distance) in a northerly direction to Angoulême ; to the west is the town of Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire about 20 kilometers away .

At the beginning of the 19th century Nonac still had well over 1200 inhabitants. Since then, the population of the place has steadily decreased, which is mainly due to the phylloxera crisis in viticulture at the end of the 19th century and the increasing mechanization of agriculture in the 20th century.

economy

Agriculture has played a dominant role in the economic life of the municipality for centuries, whose soils belong to the fins bois of the Cognac wine region . But because of the sales crisis for expensive brandies and even for wine, hardly any vines are planted; many farmers in the area have returned to 'normal' cultivation of their fields.

history

The existence of a Romanesque church suggests that the place was settled far back.

Attractions

Castle La Léotardie near Nonac
  • About one kilometer to the northeast, the former La Léotardie castle is hidden in a wooded area and surrounded by fields. It is an imposing building complex from the 14th and 15th centuries, which was later expanded to include a two-storey Renaissance gallery, which could be components of a destroyed cloister . A large detached barn ( grange ) dates from the 18th century. The entire facility is now privately owned; it serves as an estate and is normally not open to the public. It has been recognized as a Monument historique since 1944 .
Apse of the Saint-Hilaire church
  • The parish church of Saint-Hilaire was built in the 12th century over a crypt from the same period. The most important components are the apse and choir yoke , the exterior of nine blind arches are edged, cut into the turn three windows. In the 19th century, the outer walls of the nave were raised in order to be able to draw in a stucco vault on a wooden substructure. A simple archivolt portal with a pointed arched apex is embedded in the completely unadorned west facade . The single-nave interior with a transept is also largely devoid of decoration - in the apse calotte, however, sparse remains of a medieval fresco with a pantocrator depiction surrounded by the symbols of the evangelists have been uncovered. The back wall of the crypt is decorated with a painted crucifixion scene from the 15th or 16th century. Church construction has been recognized as a monument historique since 1913 .
  • A former well covered with a stone pyramid roof stands on a street in the center of the village.
